“When the nurses arrive in theatre, they immediately place the number of packs of cement required for the day into the CemCabs (both the powder and the monomer). It is important that the cement is removed from these CemCabs immediately before use so the temperature does not drop while lying around. One can then be confident of the mixing and setting time and this allows one to standardise the procedure.

“Further the setting time of the cement is significantly reduced and for a fully cemented hip replacement, this reduces surgical time to between about 5-10 minutes per case. This therefore saves nearly an hour during a day when 5 total hip replacements are performed.

“Initially I was the only user of this system but as my colleagues have become more confident with the quicker setting time, they are using the machine on a regular basis.”
